The Great Escape from  Delhi’s Smog

Every winter, Delhi-NCR sinks under a blanket of toxic haze. But a few hours away, the hills offer something Delhi can’t — clean air, quiet mornings, and sky you can actually see.

1. Lansdowne –  Quiet by Nature

A hidden gem in Pauri Garhwal, Lansdowne feels untouched. Tall oaks and pines surround this former British cantonment. Watch golden sunsets from Tip-n-Top, stroll by Bhulla Tal, or just sit back and breathe — really breathe.

2. Nainital –  Misty Mornings by the Lake

Set around its emerald lake, Nainital offers crisp air at 2,000 metres. Go boating, take the cable car to Snow View Point, or enjoy lazy mornings filled with bird songs. It’s a perfect break from the grey skies of the plains.

3. Kasauli –  A Whiff of Cedar and Calm

This tiny Himachali town blends colonial charm with mountain serenity. Kasauli’s air smells of pine and cedar, and evenings turn golden as the mist rolls in. Visit Monkey Point or Christ Church, and let time slow down.

4. Ranikhet –  Where Silence Heals

At over 1,800 metres, Ranikhet lives up to its name, the “Queen’s Meadow.” The views of the snow peaks, the scent of apple orchards, and the calm streets make it ideal for those who crave solitude and clean air.

5. Mukteshwar –  Where Heaven Feels Close

High above Nainital, Mukteshwar offers unbroken views of Nanda Devi. The forests here are thick with deodar and rhododendron. Visit Mukteshwar Dham or watch the clouds roll past Chauli Ki Jali — this is nature’s therapy.

6. Shimla –  Classic, Yet Evergreen

Shimla may be popular, but it still feels fresh. Walk the Ridge, ride the Kalka toy train, or just enjoy the scent of pine drifting through the streets. Local cleanliness efforts keep the “Queen of Hills” as charming as ever.

7. Binsar –  The Sanctuary of Stillness

Inside the Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary, the air is pure and the views stretch 300 km across the Himalayas. With minimal traffic and abundant forest trails, it’s a natural detox for both lungs and soul.

8. Chail –  A Hidden Himachali Haven

Tucked near Shimla, Chail is quieter and greener. Surrounded by deodar forests and home to the world’s highest cricket ground, it feels almost private. Breathe deep — this is what clean mountain air really smells like.

9. Almora –  Art, Spirit, and Mountain Air

Almora combines Himalayan beauty with cultural depth. Its ridge-top views and ancient temples have inspired thinkers for centuries. Visit Kasar Devi, where legends like Vivekananda once paused to reflect and recharge.

10. Kanatal –  Where the Stars Outshine  the City

Between Mussoorie and Chamba lies Kanatal, a quiet retreat perfect for camping, bonfires, and stargazing. The nights are cold, the air is pure, and the peace is unmatched — the opposite of Delhi’s restless haze.
