Athens has bagged one of the most prestigious awards in tourism. The Greek capital, Athens has been recognized as Europe’s Leading City Break Destination at the World Travel Awards 2024.
Athens competed against a strong list of destinations namely: Amsterdam, Berlin, Geneva, Copenhagen Dublin, Lisbon, London, Paris, Porto, Venice, and Rome.
The World Travel Awards 2024 highlights the long-term strategy of the City of Athens to develop sustainable tourism that the Greek capital applied in the last decade through impeccable promotion and management strategies and of the city as a competitive city break destination.
The City of Athens welcomed more than 7 million visitors in the year 2023 and set a new annual record for the number of international visitors coming to visit Athens.
The city’s official visitors guide, called “This is Athens” plays an important role in raising awareness about the city’s 129 neighborhoods and the quality of life offered by Athens, during fall, winter, and spring months.
The World Travel Awards ceremony was held in Berlin where members of the “This is Athens” team also participated in one of the leading tourism exhibitions in Europe, called the ITB Berlin.
This is not the first time that Athens has received this award. It is the second time. Athens won Europe’s Leading City Break Destination at the World Travel Awards in 2018 as well. Along with being recognized as the leading city break destination in Europe, the City of Athens was also nominated in the following: Europe’s Leading Cultural City Destination, Meeting and Conference Destination, Leading Cruise Destination, Leading Convention and Visitors Bureau, and the Acropolis were nominated as the Leading Tourist Attraction.
The award was accepted by the CEO of the Athens Development and Destination Management Agency (ADDMA), Ioannis Georgizas.

Ioannis Georgizas expressed her pride in achievement saying “We are proud of this important distinction that places our city on the map of the best city break destinations in Europe. Athens is a lively and welcoming city that is always inventing new reasons for weekend getaways. We have a rich cultural heritage as well as sunny days. Athens is full of museums, contemporary culture, gastronomy, and neighborhoods full of authentic experiences.

In the last ten years, Athens has earned numerous honors and awards at the World Travel Awards, namely leading Cultural Destination worldwide in 2022 and 2023, and the best Convention and Visitors Bureau in Europe for 2018 and 2022.
